4. How long have you played the violin?
I started playing cello in an academy near Liège when I was eight. At twelve I became member of a string ensemble for young people, where I met Elena for the first time. I then joined several Belgian youth orchestras and I travelled all over Europe at that time. I now study cello in Namur and I’m part of several music ensembles : classic and others.
5. Brothers and sisters
I have two sisters : Carine who is 24 years old and Elisa who is 11.
6. Musical inheritance from:
My father, who played the clarinet, wanted my elder sister and I to study music. My parents are not professional musicians.
7. Who influenced you in your music?
The different professors that taught me until now: the one from the cello, notes study, harmony; chamber music, …
8. Are you busy fulltime with your music?
Yes and I’m very proud to be a musician. It is a very demanding profession and I’m very passionate about it, you need a lot of spirit and zest for work to get good results.
9. Favourite artist:
In classical music : Rostropovich, Jacqueline Duprés, Yo-Yo Ma...
In popular music I don’t have a favourite. I like different styles : r&b, rap, pop, the French chanson...
However my real passion is classical music.
10. Are you ambitious?
Yes, these days you need to be ambitious if you want to achieve something. By nature I’m already competitive and I don’t like to lose; that is why music is a real challenge to me. I believe that with passion, ambition and by working hard, you can get anywhere in life.
11. How do you spend the day?
Every day I study at least four hours of cello. In the afternoon we often have rehearsals for the orchestra or the chamber music. During the week I’m in Namur where I have courses every day.
12. What do you want to achieve with your music?
I would like to touch people with my music. To me, making music is one of the best means of communication. That is why I joined Exclusive Strings, this band helps me to expand my horizon and have knowledge of all different music styles. As a musician you need to be open to different all kind of musical styles.
13. Musical background and education
Born in Liège in 1986, Nancy starts with cello and Solfège at the age of 8 in the academy of Chênée (Liège). Her professor, Laurent Chantraine, violincellist at the “Opéra Royal de Wallonie” , discovers a passionate and motivated little girl. From 1998 until 2006, she’s part of the youth chamber orchestra “La vraie Note”, conducted by Emil Lavrenov, alto at the Royal Philharmonic of Liège. This string ensemble promotes young dedicated and motivated musicians and gives them the opportunity to perform on stage as orchest member or soloist. In fact, “La vraie Note” already performed all over Europe ( Belgium, France , Italy , Spain and the Netherlands ) and they participated in several contests. In 2001, she graduates for Solfège at the academy of Chênée. In 2004, she graduates at the College of Léonie de Waha. That same year she finishes her study for cello and chamber music with high distinction. Nancy also participated in several orchestral productions, among which the symphonic orchestra of “La Monnaie”s She joined the Master Class of Didier Poskin and had private courses with Alexander Oratovsky. She diligently studies chamber music and professors like Justus Grimm, Sophie Hallynck, Paul De Clerk, Eric Chardon, J-G Raelet, P. Manuilov work with her. In September 2004, Justus Grimm accepted her in his class in the superior institute of music and pedagogy in Namur (imep). She succeeded with distinction for her first two years and is now doing her third “baccalaureat”. In February 2006, she joined a new formation “The Exclusive Strings” and started a carreer with this quartet of electric instruments.
At this moment she enroled for her first masters didactics.
